The African Americans were treated almost like animals. In the story Mr. Covey was referred to as the slave breaker, almost how someone would house break a dog. There was a woman in the story that was used for breeding.

Frederick Douglass taught himself to read and write. People thought that slaves were dumb and were not able to do these things.
Slavery Was The South's Main Source Of Economics:
No one wanted to do this back breaking labor so they made slaves do it for them. If someone did have to pay for the work to be done it would cost a lot of money because of all the work and how many people were needed to work in the fields. This would mean the overall profit margin for the plantation owners would drop.

Frederick Douglass wrote this story in 1845. The Civil war did not happen until 1861. No one really knew what the real life as a slave was at that time, and if they did they would turn a blind eye.
